Digital Didi Changing Mindsets, Practices and Narratives
Digital literacy to adolescent girls and women has helped many to aspire and reach their potential to become independent in their lives with a wide range of opportunities that they get exposed to online. One of the beneficiaries of the program, Uma Bharti, age 39, is a resident of Khichripur, Delhi. Her aspiration to become a teacher went in vain when she had to leave her studies due to her marriage. “I still wish that I had given my papers and completed my graduation,” said Uma in despair, who still wishes to become an independent working woman.
Her life after marriage usually revolves around looking after her husband, in-laws, and children. Though she is leading a happy life, there’s still a gap that was left unfilled.
When she joined the Digital Literacy for Women and Girls program, an initiative in collaboration with United Way Delhi, at CIRC, Ghazipur, her life took a sudden shift. The free time that she used to spend watching television is now used to enhance her computer and social media skills, and to her luck, her family is very supportive of her idea to go and attend computer classes that motivates her to do something for herself.
“I didn’t know how to use a computer before enrolling in these sessions, but now I can easily use it to browse the internet, and I’ve also learned a few new stitch techniques using YouTube. I would like to open my own boutique shop someday and successfully run it using the digital skills I’ve acquired here,” said Uma with an optimistic attitude.
