From Connected to Unconnected: Transforming Lives through Digital Literacy in Kashmir

Digital Empowerment Foundation has been attempting to bring the digital world to as many remote places as possible. One such effort is through the CDERP initiative which has recently focussed on improving digital literacy in Kashmir.

With a mission to connect the unconnected and bridge the information gap, DEF embarked on a journey to promote digital literacy in Kashmir. Partnering with organisations like J&K Justice for Kashmir, DEF aims to bridge the digital divide and empower the local communities in Kashmir.

DEF supplied digital devices and their START kit, containing curriculums and activities tailored for training the teachers on digital literacy. In June, DEF’s District Coordinator visited J&K Justice for Kashmir organisation’s computer centres in Ranjipora village. During her visit, she had the privilege of meeting two inspiring individuals, Naujat and Gowher, who played a pivotal role in the centre’s operations.

Naujat, our SoochnaPreneur, shared her experiences and stated that the centre had become an invaluable resource in the village, highlighting that it was the first of its kind in their community. She further shared that the centre offers a variety of services, including document process, information on government schemes, facilities and provides comprehensive digital literacy. Naujat took pride in educating the local community members and conducted digital literacy classes for both school and college students. The centre’s popularity grows in number everyday, with 50 students attending digital literacy sessions daily. 

DEF’s initiative in Ranjipora village stands as a testament to the power that digital literacy holds in transforming lives of unconnected communities. Through strategic partnerships and a uniquely designed community center, DEF’s intervention in Ranjipora demonstrates the potential of digital literacy to bridge the digital divide, improve access to government schemes, entitlements and digital services, and unlock innumerable opportunities for the community members.
