Reviving Chitrakathi and Bringing it to the Life, Today
Anitha N, an artist and curator based in Bengaluru, who works within the traditional textiles skills with the Siddi community in northern Karnataka. Over the past eight years, she has worked closely with Siddi women, focusing on the revival of the ancient quilting art known as kavands. This collaboration has been both an artistic and economic empowerment for these women, who have gained recognition for their craftsmanship through Anitha’s efforts.
Kavands, a traditional form of quilting, had been fading from memory until Anitha’s intervention. By working directly with the Siddi community, she has not only helped preserve this cultural heritage but also provided these women with a sustainable source of income. The quilts, which feature rich histories and vibrant designs, reflect the unique cultural blend of the Siddi people, who are descendants of African immigrants to India. Anitha’s work has brought these textiles to a broader audience, with the quilts being showcased at prestigious exhibitions around the world.
In addition to her on-ground efforts, Anitha won the second prize at Digital Artisans of India Award 2023-24 due to her work with the Siddi community. By promoting their work, by working with the community, by sharing their stories, she has expanded their reach, connecting them with global buyers and art enthusiasts. This digital presence has not only increased the visibility of their art but also ensured that the traditional skills of the Siddi women are preserved and appreciated in contemporary society. Through her work, Anitha has made a lasting impact on both the Siddi community and the preservation of traditional Indian textiles.
