New top level domain (TLD) .ngo is being launched in the coming year by Public Interest Registry (PIR), owners of the ‘.org’ TLD . It brings all valid non government organizations (NGO) from different places in the world under one unique umbrella. “This online identity will provide a virtual community between donors and non government organizations such as Facebook,” said Mr. Brian Cute, CEO of Public Interest Registry.
In an individual interview held on Thursday he also stated that in his short term visit to Bangladesh, he has already discussed about the .ngo domain with hundreds of local NGOs including BRAC and ASHA and spoke about the value of a strong online presence for their organization.
“The .ngo domain offers a unique opportunity for NGOs to strengthen their impact online and bolster their fund raising capacity,” said Mr. Cute. “I already met with some NGOs in Bangladesh to hear more about the present online efforts and shared how the new .ngo domain can help. Most of them expressed keen interest.”
“The .ngo domain will be generally available to validated NGOs in early 2015. Potential registrants must meet a set of eligibility requirements to confirm that they are lawful and independent not for profit organizations. Interested organizations can submit an expression of interest, which will ensure that they are kept informed about the progress of the domain launch and that they are notified when .ngo and .ong will become available. There is no extra charge to be incurred except a registration fee of Tk. 3-4,000. It will be better to submit the name for registration by early march and the service will be available in September 2015’ stated Brian Cute.Read more..
