Last month, DEF conducted an eight-day Digital Literacy, Safety and Security training for a group of 45 adolescent girls from CREA’s SELF Academy. The trainings were held at TERI Retreat, Gurgaon, from July 1 – 10, 2017 under CREA’s programme for Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) of adolescent girls using sports. The 10-day residential workshop training programme aimed at providing the girls with an initial orientation to a range of skill building opportunities. The workshop also included sessions on gender sensitisation, film making & editing, career counseling and community journalism, among others.
The trainings led by DEF looked at imparting basic skills of computer usage and challenge gender stereotypes to building confidence among adolescent girls to use technology. As part of the training, DEF conducted a need assessment of the girls to understand how they have been using mobile phones and computer skills in their life. Of the 42 participating girls, 11 owned mobile phones and eight of them had smartphones; only two had WhatsApp installed on their phones. Five were on Facebook. As many as 38 girls used a computer for the first time in their lives at the training.
The hands-on training introduced the girls to hardware, software and operating system; familiarised them with the computer interface; helped them navigate a mouse; facilitated them in using Word, Excel, PowerPoint; assisted them in getting on social media and creating digital content; and trained them in ensuring privacy and security online.
