“This is the spot that gets a signal. Apart from this the entire village and in fact the entire island is unconnected” said Mukesh (name changed).
In a world propelled forward by technological advancements, there still exist numerous villages where basic amenities are scarce, and the promise of technology remains distant. For the past month, I’ve been working in one such village, Sawariyadigar, located in the Nandurbar district of Maharashtra, alongside the indigenous tribal community.
Accessing the village itself is a challenge, requiring a 30 to 40-kilometer journey, often involving travel by boat due to the absence of road infrastructure. Despite these obstacles, I’ve been involved in a digital school initiative, striving to provide amenities that children in rural areas lack. From introducing new activities and games to encouraging digital learning, our aim is to bridge the educational gap between rural and urban areas. However, the challenges are immense. With only one small school in the village, many children drop out after primary education due to the lack of access or interest. Some brave a three-hour journey on foot daily to attend school, highlighting the dire need for improved transportation and educational facilities. In response, I’ve been developing offline content tailored to the needs of these children, ensuring that those who’ve missed out on education can catch up. Additionally, I’ve been working closely with women in the community, leading meetings to understand and address their issues, empowering them to confront challenges and strive for a better future. Living amidst limited internet connectivity, I’ve marvelled at the resilience of the villagers. Despite facing insurmountable obstacles, they persevere, grappling with problems while maintaining hope for development. Witnessing their determination, despite lacking resources, has been truly humbling. As I reflect on my experiences, I’m reminded of the urgent need to bridge the digital divide and empower rural communities with the tools they need to thrive. It’s not just about providing internet access; it’s about fostering innovation, resilience, and inclusivity. Only then can we truly embark on a journey towards equitable development, ensuring that no one is left behind in our pursuit of progress.
Through collaborative efforts and innovation, we can create a future where every individual, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to succeed and thrive in the digital age. Together, let’s work towards building a more inclusive and empowered society, where every voice is heard, and every dream is within reach.
