Simran’s story is an inspiring narrative of opportunity for educational advancement and the use of technology in the least developed regions. Ironically, as a 14-year-old student studying at the Subhanpora Anantnag Digital Literacy Centre, she has gone far in her digital literacy program.
In her village where women were restricted from getting any formal education and technology was unheard of, Simran’s determination was evident. Her intelligence was acknowledged by the Digital Empowerment Foundation, and she was exposed to the concept of computer learning. Simran also welcomed this new challenge with open arms, learning essential mouse and keyboard skills and discovering different programs and applications.
Citing her family’s illiteracy in computers, she performed well in the theoretical and practical tests, scoring high grades most of the time. This determination has not only had an impact on her and given her a voice but also on her family and the entire community. However, the study does not end at enhancing technical skills for Simran. Through this, she has come to understand everything about computers from how they are built to how they work.
She is grateful for the opportunity that DEF offers and delves into other forms of digital learning available. The story of Simran is a good lesson for all of us and shows that the young brain can create a lot when it has technologies and knowledge at its disposal. She sets an example for anyone and everyone, regardless of their place in life or lack of access to technology.
