Amidst all the tall talks of a possible Constitutional amendment to facilitate reservations for Dalits in getting ahead in life, a New Delhi based NGO, Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF), has recently found out a unique journalist. He is now a 70-year-old dalit man. His name is Mr. Gouri Shankar Rajak (washerman by caste) who has been carrying out a handwritten weekly newspaper in his native Dumka, Jharkhand, India for the last 24 years. All the activities associated with the bringing out of the newspaper was carried out by this man alone, such was his passion for work. Now he has leprosy and hence can’t work.
DEF heard of him and his plight and immediately contacted him and decided to help this man. The NGO immediately gave him a basic phone with sim card and offered him a stipend of Rs. 5000/- per month henceforth. Also, all his 24 years of work will be Online courtesy DEF through digitisation with a dedicated space on its website. The story was picked up and published in the Hindustan Times.
Besides this, the Govt owes him Rs. 4 lakh as payment for the advertisements in the handwritten paper for long. DEF is also helping Mr. Razak in recovering that amount The process has already been started.
