As a facilitator of the STEM for Girls project pointed out, “Schools and colleges work to prepare students to become responsible citizens and active participants in the economic processes. But the question of aligning the education path with the societal needs rather than just the industrial needs has to be mapped out by the educators, civil societies, parents and students. STEM helps in developing mental excellence in this regard by encouraging logical thinking and assertive decision making.” Shedding more light on how the STEM for Girls project is bringing about change in academic, personal and social set-up, we have another case story of a young girl named Rojee Bashyas from Assam.
Her teacher has observed that, “Before introducing the STEM for Girls Programme in her school, she was not familiar with certain words, such as life skills, STEM oriented problem solving mindset, critical thinking, creativity etc. She didn’t have an option on choosing her career path as there was no clarity about how many types of STEM related jobs are present. She was reluctant to express freely and felt shy to talk to others. After introducing the STEM for Girls Programme in her school, she has improved her communication skills and confidence levels. She wants to become a Doctor. And she has more clarity about her career and future planning by attending the STEM sessions, RMI and Webinars of career guidance conducted by Quest Alliance.”
Her father is grateful for such a project as he recalls, “I can’t give children much time as I should be because I am out of the house doing business most of the time. I also lack time to ask anything about their studies. But after introducing the STEM Sessions in her school, I have noticed that she is practicing to think scientifically and logically all on her own.”
The project has helped students to be more active than before and the teachers hope that more students get involved in the program and improve the quality of education.
