6th May 2012 was a proud moment for North East Development Foundation. The day marked the start of the first Krishna KantaHandiqui State Open University study centre in Sonapur, Assam. Sonapur, a rapidly developing area in the outskirts of Guwahati city, falls short in providing good institutions for education through open and distance learning. Keeping this in mind, North East Development Foundation launched the Bachelor Preparatory Programme (BPP) and took a step forward towards making education reach the unreached of the society.Inaugurated by Mr.Ratul Patowary, Asstt. Registrar, KKHSOU with Dr. D. Khanikar, Principal, Sonapur College and Mr.Debesar Doloi, Councilor, KamarKuchi GaonPanchayat as guests, the study centre received outstanding positive response from the students. With a first batch of 72 students and guided by a faculty of five and two official staff, classes started on 16th May, 2012. Then on, the centre has taken off a flying start. 55 students are appearing for their final exams on 17th March, 2013. On the lighter side, with a perfect blend of education and fun, the faculty and the students also arranged a picnic and celebrated Saraswati Puja this year.
Now, motivated by the great response from the students, North East Development Foundation is also starting the BA programme this year. Clearly the motto of the KKHSOU ‘Education Beyond Barriers’ of age, academic background and geographical boundaries is a new window of opportunity for the youth of Sonapur.
