Basanti Khalkhi is a woman entrepreneur from Khunti, Jharkhand. She stays with her husband and three children. She does lemongrass cultivation and has been earning enough money from it for herself and her family members. There is a high demand for lemongrass in the market as it has multiple uses; it is used for body and head massage as well as for joint pains. ‘Plash Mart’ is a store in Khunti that gives her regular orders and she delivers to them.
Joining the digital training program initiated by Digital Empowerment Foundation helped Basanti digitise her business and streamline it. Along with optimising her business Basanti also learnt about fake news and misinformation and how to identify it. During the second wave of the pandemic when vaccination had already started people were scared to take the vaccine due to the spread of rumours and misinformation. Basanti took the initiative to inform those around her about the importance of taking the vaccine and she got herself, her family and her friends vaccinated. Since she was trained in digital tools she got everyone registered on the CoWIN portal.
