The STEM for Girls project has been introduced in the states of Assam and Telangana by DEF with an intent to not just orient students towards STEM but designed in such a way that it serves as a catalyst to bring changes in the way education and professional careers are perceived. The stories of young girls who have been part of this are a reflection of such changes with the support of their facilitators, teachers and parents.
Asmitha is a 9th grade student from Siddipet district of Telangana. Hailing from a middle class farming family, she couldn’t analyse what was right for her. But her parents are happy that she has become more responsible by understanding and practising to think for herself, especially when it comes to her career choices. From having no clue about what her future might look like, to clarifying doubts pertaining to the skills required to reach her goal, Asmitha has improved in her critical thinking and confidence level to express freely.
Often lack of knowledge is underrated in a sense that the consequences of it seen in the behavioural aspects of the students are not paid enough attention. But the changes in the way students feel about their capabilities, hope to build a better future for themselves and persevere to reach their goals with clarity are a result of making them more aware.
Another major aspect where students have shown great interest is the value of communication skills in personal and professional lives. The participants of the project have become very active and keen learners. Collaborative skills are vital in the working space which is also included in the modules and Asmitha has actively engaged in it by working as a team leader. She spreads the message by talking about life skills in the fair and performing skit on online safety.
The teachers observe that the students are more motivated because of the sessions conducted. Role Model interactions have helped students gain more confidence. While the STEM classes continue to send great messages and lessons, we hope to see Asmitha continue to persevere in honing her skills to become a Software Engineer as she wishes to be.
