“Bandana’s Unbreakable Spirit: Overcoming Disability, Gender Bias, and Loss to Empower Her Community”
Life has not been so kind to Bandana. Born with a locomotive disability, her early years were marked by adversity. At the age of 18, she was married off to an older man, and her challenges only multiplied when she lost her husband just three years into their marriage, leaving her with a child to care for and no financial support. It felt as though her life had come to a sudden stop.
With limited options in her village, Bandana decided to venture out in search of a job. However, finding employment as a woman in her community was an uphill battle. She faced gender bias, and opportunities were scarce. There were days when she could barely make ends meet, resorting to feeding her child soaked rice and going to bed hungry. She recalls, “Those days were the worst in my life.”
Despite her hardships, Bandana had always been a bright student with a strong passion for education. This passion eventually led her to secure a job with an institution registered under the Bihar Education Project. Although the pay was modest, it allowed her to provide for her family. However, after five years, the project came to an end, and she found herself jobless once again.
It was during this challenging period that Bandana heard about the Samarth SoochnaPreneur Program from her friends. Recognising it as a potential lifeline, she joined the program. The initial days were tough, as she had never used a mobile phone or computer before. Still, she was determined and managed to adapt to the technology.
Today, Bandana operates a mobile information centre, using the MeraApp to visit people in their homes and provide essential services. She is deeply committed to serving her community promptly and efficiently. Reflecting on her journey, Bandana marvels at her transformation from a girl who had never used a phone to a woman who connects people to the world.
Her path was filled with obstacles and challenges, but Bandana persevered. She is now a proud member of DEF’s empowerment programs, a shining example that no disability can hinder your growth when you have determination, resilience, and the support of programs that empower individuals to overcome adversity.
