Urwashi Nirala, a Mithila artist from Assam, who stands at the cusp of tradition and modernity through her innovative approach to Mithila Art. Rooted in an ancient tradition known for its vibrant designs and beautiful images, Mithila Art has long been a canvas for depicting cultural symbolism. Urwashi breathes new life into this age-old art form by integrating it with contemporary digital techniques, creating a bridge between the past and the present.
Urwashi started using the digital tools at her disposal to be able to preserve Mithila but to also experiment with the art, to include modern elements and use modern techniques to transform the traditional. By leveraging digital tools, Urwashi has not only enriched the traditional art form but also made it more accessible. Her use of animation and digital mediums allows her to amalgamate Mithila Art with a modern allure, transcending the constraints of physical materials. This helps her create visually beautiful products that engage with an audience beyond borders through social media platforms.
In addition to her own creative endeavors, Urwashi also works to build the capacities of the next generation of artists. She trains students and community women in digital Mithila designing, thereby creating an ecosystem that supports the preservation and evolution of the art form. Her workshops and training sessions empower individuals with the skills needed to master digital tools and apply them to Mithila Art, fostering a new wave of artists who can carry forward the tradition in a contemporary context.
