Priyanshi Somani
Age does not define the boundaries of excellence and Priyanshi Somani has proved just that. She is the first Indian to win the prestigious Mental Calculation World Cup in 2010, achieving this feat at a young age of 12 years!
Participants at the Mental Calculation World Cup compete to solve a series of highly complex mathematical tasks in the shortest time possible. The challenge of facing experienced mathematical wizards from 16 different countries, the oldest being 61 years of age, did not deter Priyanshi from her goal. She went on to solve the assigned tasks in precise 6.28 minutes beating all the remaining 37 participants. On 3 January 2012, Priyanshi further established her mathematical genius by setting a new world record for the fastest calculation of square roots.
Priyanshi has been lucky to receive full support and guidance from her parents to pursue her mathematical dreams. She started solving math problems at an early age of six years with her brother and her interest in math grew from there. She enjoys challenging herself to the last mile, and inspires young students to do what they really enjoy! She also became the Indian ambassador for World Math Day 2011. Achieving these milestones has been no small feat for this girl, who believes she can touch the skies, even at her age!
Her power of memory will boggle your mind; she can calculate more digits than you can count! Priyanshi is neither unperturbed by her inexperience when compared to other competitors, nor does she let pressure mount on her from all her past success. This simple young girl is all set to become a power woman in the future.
Quote- “I love anything and everything that has speed. When a math problem is in front of you, many processes go on in your mind. From the eye seeing the problem, the brain analyzing it and trying to solve it in the least possible time, and finally putting it on the paper or screen. Challenging the speed of this cycle is what fascinates me. Making a new record is the target, every time.”
