Twenty-five-year-old Kunti Devi had received a cheque worth Rs. 2,000 under the Janani Suraksha Yojana in 2014 when she was pregnant. However, her husband and her had no knowledge of how to encash a cheque and receive the money entitled to them. And so, the cheque simply gathered dust in their cupboard for a year, and lost its validity.
In 2015, when a Soochna Seva team organised a community meet in Rani Gaon panchayat of Uttar Pradesh, many people participated. One of them was Chaggan Lal, husband of Kunti Devi. It was at this meeting that he realised what a grave mistake he had made by making no effort to enquire about the cheque and the process of encashing it. Though he was a year late, he still decided to approach the Soochna Sevaks with his problem. The team promised to take up the matter with the doctors at the public health centre (PHC) but they received a lot of resistance initially. However, when the Soochna Sevaks gently reminded the doctors of the power of the Right to Information (RTI), the doctors immediately agreed to check their records. Eventually, they issued a fresh cheque in favour of Kunti Devi. The money now lies securing in a bank account for Kunti and Chaggan’s next child.
