Digital Empowerment Foundation has made a conscious effort to work for the enablement and mass digital empowerment of marginalized and vulnerable communities across the nation. A digital evangelist for over 18 years, our various initiatives have equipped communities with access to information and brought them out of digital darkness.
On the path towards connectivity, DEF launched Manthan Awards which have now expanded into mBillionth Awards South Asia, Social Media for Empowerment (SM4E) Awards and eNGO Challenge Awards. It aims to recognize, honour and encourage initiatives and social enterprises working towards innovation and community building; thereby creating an ecosystem of innovators to collaborate and scale up across nine South Asian countries – India| Afghanistan | Bangladesh | Bhutan | Maldives | Myanmar | Nepal | Pakistan | Sri Lanka.
In 2020, DEF has launched its 11th mBillionth Awards South Asia, 7th eNGOChallenge and 7th Social Media for Empowerment Awards. Rising to the challenge of the Covid-19 healthcare crisis, this year the Awards will be held Online.
A non-monetary award system, these will focus on knowledge sharing and digital innovation leading to positive social development.

About the Awards
11th mBillionth Awards South Asia is the first-of-its-kind initiative in the region. It recognizes and felicitates innovations and excellence in development and use of mobile applications as well as best practices in the delivery of mobile content and services, in ten core categories. It provides a platform for people-oriented innovations in the telecom industry and a South Asia Congress for exchanging ideas, strengthening policies and mobile advocacy. The eNGO Challenge 2020 aims to honour and reward grassroots organizations and NGOs that have done some exceptional work with communities using any kind of new-age digital tools. Its objective is to Recognize, Encourage & Promote grassroots organizations and initiatives working for the holistic development of the people; Create an ecosystem of stakeholders including government, industry, academia, civil society and others to create wider networking, engagement, partnership and collaboration opportunities; Promote and create bottom-up information and knowledge repository of best practices, case studies, and project replication, sustainability and advocacy studies. Social Media for Empowerment (SM4E) is a platform that identifies and honours initiatives that leverage the power of social media to bring about a positive change in society. Accepting nomination across seven core categories, the platform aims to: Create a regional network of experts to facilitate the use of social media among participating countries and create scope for cooperation, collaboration and network; Demonstrate best social media initiatives, practices and success stories from South Asian countries; Create effective community network that shares authentic information on social changes and developmental activities through social media. The exceptional year that 2020 has been till now, we understand the need to encourage initiatives working towards tackling Covid-19 and its impact. So we have introduced a new category for each Award. Innovation@Covid-19 recognizes and rewards initiatives helping communities cope with the global pandemic. Any solution-based program or initiative working towards easing issues born out of or during Covid-19 may apply under this category.
