DEF is always very keen on welcoming new members to the family and never ceases to be joyful about introducing digital tools in places where there has been no prior engagement. Such interventions are gentle reminders to keep working at the mission to bridge the gaps of digital exclusions as there are still plenty of communities to reach.
Kashmir has been a new Chapter in the Digital Literacy drive. The continuous internet shutdowns and network issues that have affected people living there are all the more reason DEF finds the need to reach out to them and include them in the digital economy. On the recommendation of the Indian Army DEF’s team got in touch with the government and army goodwill schools.
A 10 day training session was held by the district coordinator of DEF, Saba, starting from 27tth December. DEF provided computers and START Kit to 18 school teachers which had the curriculum on Digital Literacy spread over five different books that were covered by Saba during the session. The teachers expressed that the sessions were very fruitful and looked forward to getting more such information in the future. They were able to learn to make reports and other kinds of documents as they were taught to get used to MS office tools and the basics of computers. As they had not been exposed to computers or any subjects around it, they showed a lot of interest in learning new applications.
A ten day orientation training was also held online by the district coordinator which started on 13th January, 2023. As the schools were shut during winter vacations, teachers could access the training online. This session also reminded the team that prior to these training sessions, the teachers never had the opportunity to learn about computers or its applications. The training sessions have proven to be helpful not only to the teachers, but also to the community members as there is a lot of knowledge transfer happening. Post training, the teachers have also been conducting online classes with their students until the school reopen.
