“Kashish Srivastava’s journey from digital uncertainty to rural community leader, combating misinformation through DEF’s ASPEN Project, exemplifies the transformative impact of the Safeguarding Rural India through Critical Digital Literacy initiative.”
The Safeguarding Rural India through Critical Digital Literacy project has brought transformative changes in the lives of many individuals in rural areas of India. Kashish Srivastava, a resident of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, who enthusiastically embraced this initiative, shares her success story.
Kashish said that in the past, she had a smartphone but lacked the confidence to use it effectively. However, her association with the Safeguarding Rural India through Critical Digital Literacy project was a turning point for her. The knowledge and skills she gained were invaluable. Not only did Kashish enhance her own abilities, but she also had the privilege of training 15 women from her community, witnessing their excitement as they discovered the potential of smartphones, which was truly gratifying.
As her involvement deepened, Kashish took the initiative to establish a center within her community. It was a proud moment for her, realising that she could make a difference in the lives of those around her. The convenience of having essential services accessible within their village brought about a welcome change for everyone. From providing services such as Aadhaar cards to PAN cards, photocopies, pension assistance, and income certificates, Kashish offered a comprehensive range of services that significantly uplifted the community.
This transformative journey added another layer to Kashish’s education, enabling her to contribute even more effectively. Alongside her fellow community members, she recognised the importance of safeguarding rural India through critical digital literacy. They understood the pressing need to combat fake news and misinformation, echoing the sentiment expressed by a community member, Rekha: “With knowledge comes the power to discern truth from falsehood.”
The ASPEN Project not only empowered Kashish and her community with essential skills and knowledge but also ignited a fervor to protect the community against the perils of misinformation. As they continue on this path, they remain steadfast in their commitment to spreading awareness and digital literacy to every corner of rural India, illuminating lives along the way.
